Product description
The GY-471 3A Range MAX471 Current Sensor Module is a compact and versatile high-side bidirectional current sensing module designed for monitoring current in DC-powered and battery-operated systems. Built around the MAX471 current-sense IC, the module provides a convenient way to measure current without interrupting the system’s ground path.
With an integrated 35mΩ precision sense resistor, the module can monitor current flowing in either direction, making it useful for applications such as battery charging and discharging, DC motor monitoring, power supply measurement, robotics, and embedded energy management.
The module provides an analog current-sense output along with a SIGN direction indicator, allowing a compatible microcontroller to determine both the approximate current level and the direction of current flow.
High-Side Current Sensing
The GY-471 uses a high-side current-sensing configuration, meaning the sensing element is placed in the positive supply path rather than the ground return path.
This approach has several advantages for embedded systems because the load ground can remain connected directly to the system ground. It is particularly useful in battery-powered applications where maintaining a common ground reference is important.
Bidirectional Current Measurement
The module can detect current flowing in both directions, making it suitable for systems where current may alternate between charging and discharging.
For example, in a battery-powered system, the module can be used to monitor:
- Charging current
- Discharging current
- Load current
- Power supply current
- Motor current
The SIGN output indicates the direction of current flow, while the analog output can be monitored by a microcontroller to determine the current level.
Integrated Precision Shunt Resistor
A 35mΩ precision sense resistor is integrated into the module. The resistor creates a small voltage difference proportional to the current flowing through it, which is then processed by the MAX471 IC.
Because the sensing resistor has a low resistance value, the voltage drop introduced into the power path is kept relatively small compared with higher-resistance sensing methods.
Up to ±3A Current Measurement
The GY-471 is designed for current monitoring applications up to approximately ±3A, depending on the module configuration and operating conditions.
The bidirectional capability makes it particularly useful for battery and power-management projects where the current direction changes during operation.
For accurate results, the current should remain within the module’s specified range and the board should be used with appropriately rated wiring and connections.
Wide Supply Voltage Range
The module supports a supply voltage range of approximately 3V to 36V, making it suitable for a wide variety of low- and medium-voltage DC systems.
It can be incorporated into battery-powered electronics, motor systems, embedded devices, and other DC power-monitoring applications.
Always ensure that the applied voltage and current remain within the specifications of the actual module supplied.
Low Power Consumption
The MAX471-based design is intended for low-power monitoring applications. The module has a typical operating consumption of approximately 100µA and supports a low-power shutdown mode with a maximum current of around 18µA.
This makes it useful for applications where the current-monitoring circuit itself should have minimal impact on overall system power consumption.
SIGN Output for Current Direction
The module provides an open-collector SIGN output that can be used to identify the direction of current flow.
This is particularly useful for battery-management projects because the controller can distinguish between:
- Current flowing into the battery
- Current flowing out of the battery
The SIGN signal can be connected to a suitable digital input on a microcontroller.
Analog Current Output
The MAX471 provides an output signal that can be monitored by a microcontroller’s analog input. The output can be used to determine the approximate current flowing through the sensing resistor.
This makes the module suitable for real-time current monitoring and data logging applications.
Users can process the analog signal using software to display current values, calculate power consumption, detect abnormal current conditions, or record energy usage.
Easy Microcontroller Integration
The GY-471 can be integrated into projects using popular development platforms such as:
- Arduino
- ESP32
- STM32
- Other compatible microcontrollers
A microcontroller can read the analog output and monitor the SIGN signal to determine current magnitude and direction.
When connecting the module to a 3.3V microcontroller, verify that the module’s output voltage levels are compatible with the controller’s analog and digital inputs.
Compact Design
The GY-471 uses a compact module format that can be easily incorporated into DIY electronics and embedded systems.
Its integrated current-sensing resistor and MAX471 IC reduce the number of external components required for basic current monitoring.

Battery Monitoring
The bidirectional sensing capability makes the GY-471 particularly useful for battery monitoring applications.
A microcontroller can monitor the current direction and magnitude to determine whether the battery is charging or supplying power to a load.
This information can be combined with voltage measurements to estimate instantaneous power and track system energy usage.
DC Motor Monitoring
The module can also be used to monitor current drawn by DC motors in robotics and automation projects.
Monitoring motor current can provide useful information about:
- Motor load
- Stall conditions
- Changes in mechanical resistance
- Battery consumption
- System performance
For motor applications, appropriate filtering and software processing may be required because motor switching can introduce electrical noise.
Arduino and ESP32 Integration
The analog output can be connected to an appropriate analog input on an Arduino, ESP32, or other microcontroller, while the SIGN output can be connected to a digital input.
The controller can then process the measurements to display or record current information.
When using the module with an ESP32 or other 3.3V controller, carefully verify the module’s output levels and ensure they do not exceed the controller’s input limits.
