Product description
The INA226 I2C Bi-Directional Voltage, Current, and Power Monitor Module is a high-precision power monitoring solution designed to measure bus voltage, shunt voltage, current, and power in electronic and embedded systems. Based on the Texas Instruments INA226 monitor IC, the module provides high-resolution measurements and communicates with a host controller through the I²C/SMBus interface.
With its 16-bit measurement resolution, programmable averaging, configurable conversion times, and alert functionality, the INA226 is suitable for applications where accurate electrical monitoring is required. It can be used with popular development platforms such as Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, STM32, and other I²C-compatible microcontrollers.
High-Precision Electrical Measurement
The INA226 can monitor multiple electrical parameters through a single compact module. It measures the voltage across the external shunt resistor to calculate current and also monitors the bus voltage.
From these measurements, the system can determine:
- Bus voltage
- Shunt voltage
- Load current
- Power consumption
The high-resolution ADC provides 16-bit measurement resolution, making the module suitable for applications where more detailed power measurements are required.
Bi-Directional Current Measurement
The INA226 supports bi-directional current sensing, allowing it to measure current flowing in either direction through the shunt resistor.
This makes it useful for applications such as:
- Battery charging and discharging
- Bidirectional power supplies
- Battery-powered devices
- Motor and actuator systems
- Energy storage systems
- Power conversion circuits
The actual current measurement range depends on the shunt resistor value and module design.
High-Side and Low-Side Current Monitoring
The module can be configured for current measurement on the high side or low side of a load, depending on the circuit design.
High-side sensing measures current between the power source and the load without requiring the load ground to be disconnected. This can be useful in many embedded and power-management applications.
Low-side sensing can also be used where the circuit design requires the shunt resistor to be placed on the ground return path.
I²C / SMBus Communication
The INA226 communicates with a microcontroller through the I²C/SMBus interface, requiring only the SDA and SCL communication lines along with power and ground.
This makes it easy to integrate into systems using:
- Arduino
- ESP32
- Raspberry Pi
- STM32
- Other I²C-compatible controllers
The I²C interface also allows multiple compatible devices to share the same bus, subject to address configuration and bus limitations.
Programmable Measurement Configuration
The INA226 provides configurable measurement settings, allowing users to balance measurement accuracy, noise reduction, and response time according to their application.
Programmable features include:
- Conversion time
- Averaging
- Measurement configuration
- Alert thresholds
Averaging can be useful for reducing the effect of measurement noise, while shorter conversion times can be selected when faster updates are required.
Alert Function
The module includes an alert output that can be configured to respond to programmable electrical conditions.
The alert function can be used for applications such as:
- Overcurrent detection
- Overvoltage monitoring
- Power-limit monitoring
- Undervoltage detection
- Fault detection
- Custom threshold monitoring
The alert output is an open-drain signal, allowing it to be connected to a suitable controller input or monitoring circuit.
Wide Bus Voltage Measurement
The INA226 supports bus voltage measurement from approximately 0V to 36V, making it suitable for monitoring many low- and medium-voltage DC systems.
It can be used for monitoring battery packs, embedded power rails, development boards, solar systems, and other DC power sources within the module’s specified limits.
Always ensure that the voltage applied to the module and measured bus remains within the manufacturer’s specified electrical limits.
High Accuracy
The INA226 is designed for high-precision power measurement, with a specified maximum offset voltage of approximately ±10 µV and maximum gain error of approximately ±0.1% for the INA226 device.
The actual accuracy of the complete module depends on factors such as the shunt resistor value and tolerance, PCB layout, temperature, wiring, calibration, and measurement conditions.
Low Power Consumption
The INA226 itself has a low typical operating current of approximately 330 µA, making it suitable for embedded systems where power consumption needs to be minimized.
For battery-operated monitoring applications, the module can be incorporated into a power-management system to monitor energy usage without adding significant load to the overall system.
Compact Module Design
The module has a compact form factor of approximately 20 × 21 × 3 mm, making it suitable for integration into embedded systems and compact electronic projects.
Its small size allows it to be mounted inside prototypes, power-management systems, battery monitoring setups, and custom enclosures.

Battery Monitoring
The module can be used to monitor the electrical behavior of rechargeable batteries and battery-powered systems.
By measuring current and voltage, a microcontroller can monitor charging and discharging activity and calculate power consumption. Additional software can be used to log measurements, display values, or trigger alerts when programmed thresholds are reached.
Solar and Energy Monitoring
The INA226 is also useful for monitoring small solar power systems and DC energy sources. Developers can measure voltage and current and calculate the power being generated or consumed by the system.
This makes it useful for educational solar projects, IoT energy monitoring, and renewable-energy experiments.
Arduino and ESP32 Integration
The I²C interface makes the module convenient to use with popular development boards.
A typical system can connect:
- VCC → compatible power supply
- GND → controller ground
- SDA → controller SDA
- SCL → controller SCL
- ALERT → optional digital input
Software libraries can then be used to configure the INA226, read measurement registers, and calculate voltage, current, and power values.
When connecting to a 3.3V controller such as ESP32 or Raspberry Pi, verify the module’s I²C pull-up voltage and logic-level compatibility before connection.
Alert-Based Protection
The programmable alert feature can be used to build systems that respond automatically when electrical parameters exceed predefined limits.
For example, a controller could:
- Monitor load current continuously.
- Detect when the current exceeds a programmed threshold.
- Receive an alert signal.
- Disable the load or activate a protection mechanism.
This makes the module useful for experimental power protection and fault-monitoring systems.
Installation and Usage Tips
For reliable measurements:
- Use a stable and clean supply for the module.
- Ensure the shunt connections are secure.
- Keep high-current paths short and appropriately sized.
- Use a suitable shunt resistor for the required current range.
- Check the polarity of IN+ and IN- connections.
- Configure the correct shunt calibration in software.
- Avoid exceeding the module’s voltage and current limits.
- Use suitable wiring and connectors for higher-current applications.
- Verify I²C logic levels before connecting to 3.3V controllers.
Important Notes
- The ±20A current range is dependent on the installed shunt resistor and module configuration and should not be treated as a universal rating for every INA226 board.
- The INA226 measures current by sensing the voltage across a shunt resistor; it does not directly measure current without the appropriate shunt arrangement.
- Actual measurement accuracy depends on the shunt resistor, PCB layout, wiring, temperature, calibration, and operating conditions.
- Do not exceed the specified 36V bus-voltage limit.
- The module’s supply voltage and measured bus voltage are separate specifications; follow the correct connection arrangement.
- When using the module with Arduino, ESP32, or Raspberry Pi, ensure the I²C signal levels are compatible.
- For high-current applications, use appropriately rated wiring, connectors, and protection components.
- Product images are for illustration only and the actual PCB layout, component placement, connector configuration, or appearance may vary slightly between production batches.
