KY-039 Finger Heartbeat Detection Sensor

The KY-039 is a compact finger heartbeat detection sensor module that detects a person's pulse. It uses an infrared (IR) LED and a phototransistor to sense blood flow through a finger and provides an analog output signal that a microcontroller can read and analyze.

How It Works

The IR LED is positioned on one side of the finger and the phototransistor on the other. The phototransistor receives the light flux passing through the finger, and its resistance changes slightly with each blood pressure pulse. A high-value resistor is used because most of the light through the finger is absorbed. Shielding the phototransistor from stray light is important, since fluctuating ambient lighting (for example 50 Hz or 60 Hz room lighting) can add noise to a faint heartbeat signal.
