Product description
The DS3231 IIC RTC Module is a high-precision and reliable real-time clock module designed for accurate timekeeping in electronic and embedded systems. Based on the Maxim DS3231 RTC IC, it uses a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) to provide excellent timekeeping accuracy with minimal frequency drift. This makes it particularly suitable for applications where more precise timekeeping is required.
The module communicates with a host microcontroller through the I²C two-wire interface, making it easy to integrate with popular development platforms such as Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, Raspberry Pi, STM32, AVR, and PIC. It supports both 12-hour and 24-hour time formats and includes an AM/PM indicator when operating in 12-hour mode.
An onboard AT24C32 EEPROM provides 32Kbit (4KB) of non-volatile storage, allowing users to store configuration data, event information, calibration values, or other small amounts of information. The RTC also includes two programmable alarms and a configurable square-wave output, providing additional functionality for time-based control and scheduling applications.
The module features a built-in 10-bit digital temperature sensor with 0.25°C resolution, allowing the system to monitor the temperature around the RTC. An aging trim register is also provided for fine frequency calibration when required.
A CR2032 battery holder provides backup power capability, allowing the RTC to continue maintaining time when the main power supply is disconnected. The CR2032 battery is not included and can be added separately when backup timekeeping is required.

Design and Construction
The DS3231 RTC module is built around the DS3231 high-precision real-time clock IC and integrates the supporting components required for accurate timekeeping, temperature measurement, backup power, and I²C communication.
The module uses a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator, which helps compensate for changes in oscillator frequency caused by temperature variations. This provides better timekeeping stability compared with basic RTC modules that use a conventional crystal oscillator.
An onboard AT24C32 EEPROM provides additional non-volatile storage. The memory can be accessed by the host microcontroller through the I²C interface and can be used for storing small amounts of persistent project information.
The board includes a CR2032 battery holder for backup operation. When a suitable battery is installed, the RTC can continue maintaining time when the main power supply is removed.
The module also provides access to the RTC’s alarm and square-wave functions, allowing it to be integrated into systems that require scheduled events, periodic timing signals, or interrupt-based control.
The compact PCB design makes the module suitable for breadboard prototyping, embedded systems, automation projects, IoT devices, and custom electronic equipment.
Working Principle
The DS3231 maintains accurate time and calendar information using its integrated temperature-compensated oscillator and RTC circuitry. It keeps track of seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year.
The host microcontroller communicates with the DS3231 through the I²C interface. The controller can read the current time and date, update the clock, configure alarms, and access other supported functions.
The temperature-compensation system continuously accounts for oscillator frequency changes caused by temperature variations. This helps the RTC maintain accurate time over a wide operating temperature range.
The integrated 10-bit digital temperature sensor measures the temperature near the RTC and provides the result digitally with a resolution of 0.25°C. This temperature information can also be read by the connected microcontroller through the I²C interface.
The two programmable alarms can be configured to trigger events at specific times or intervals. The programmable square-wave output can provide periodic timing signals from 1Hz to 8kHz, depending on the selected configuration.
When the main system power is unavailable, a suitable CR2032 battery installed in the holder can provide backup power for the RTC, allowing it to maintain the current time.
The onboard AT24C32 EEPROM operates independently as non-volatile memory and can be used to retain data even when the main power is disconnected.
