Product description
The WS2812B 12-Bit RGB LED Ring Module is a compact and versatile programmable LED module featuring 12 individually addressable RGB LEDs arranged in a circular PCB. With an approximate 50mm outer diameter, this LED ring is suitable for decorative lighting, status indicators, visual displays, robotics, wearable electronics, and DIY microcontroller projects.
Each LED integrates a WS2812B RGB LED and driver IC, allowing every LED on the ring to be controlled independently. You can set the color and brightness of each LED individually using a single digital data line, significantly reducing the number of microcontroller pins required.
The module supports 24-bit RGB color control, providing a wide range of color combinations and allowing users to create colorful animations, gradients, patterns, indicators, and dynamic lighting effects.
Each LED includes an integrated approximately 18mA constant-current driver, helping maintain consistent LED brightness and color output. Because the driver is integrated into each WS2812B LED, external current-limiting resistors are generally not required for the individual LEDs.
The LED ring operates from a 5V DC power supply and can be controlled using popular microcontroller platforms such as Arduino, ESP32, STM32, and other compatible controllers. A single digital output pin can be used to send the control data to all 12 LEDs.
The module also supports cascading, allowing multiple LED rings or compatible WS2812B LED modules to be connected together. The data output of one ring can be connected to the data input of the next ring, enabling larger LED arrangements while still using a single control signal from the microcontroller.
Its circular design makes the module particularly useful for applications requiring a ring-shaped lighting arrangement, such as status indicators, electronic clocks, robotics, control panels, decorative lighting, and interactive projects.
The WS2812B uses a timing-sensitive single-wire digital communication protocol. For reliable operation, it is best suited to microcontrollers capable of generating the required timing accurately. It is generally not recommended for Linux-based microcomputers or interpreted controllers such as Basic Stamp without suitable hardware or software support.

Design and Construction
The WS2812B 12-Bit RGB LED Ring Module is built on a compact circular printed circuit board with 12 RGB LEDs positioned evenly around the ring. The approximately 50mm outer diameter provides a convenient form factor for projects requiring a circular visual indicator or lighting arrangement.
Each LED combines an RGB light-emitting element with an integrated WS2812B control circuit. This integrated construction eliminates the need for separate driver circuits for each LED and simplifies the overall wiring.
The module provides power and digital data connections for controlling the LEDs. The DIN (Data In) connection receives the digital control signal from the microcontroller, while the DOUT (Data Out) connection can forward the signal to another compatible WS2812B LED module.
Because the LEDs are individually addressable, users can create different colors and brightness levels at different positions around the ring. This makes the module suitable for both simple status indication and complex animated lighting effects.
The integrated constant-current driver helps provide consistent LED operation and reduces the need for additional external components.
Working Principle
The WS2812B LED ring receives both power and serial digital control data from a compatible microcontroller.
A control signal is sent to the data input of the first LED. The data contains color and brightness information for the LEDs in the ring. The first LED reads the information intended for it and passes the remaining data to the next LED through its data output.
This process continues through all 12 LEDs, allowing every LED to receive its own RGB color information.
Each LED can therefore be programmed independently. For example, one LED can be set to red, another to green, another to blue, while the remaining LEDs can display completely different colors.
The module supports 24-bit color control, typically providing 8-bit control for each of the red, green, and blue channels. This allows a large range of colors to be produced through combinations of the three RGB channels.
Brightness and color can be changed dynamically by continuously sending updated data from the microcontroller. This makes it possible to create effects such as:
- Color cycling
- Rainbow effects
- Running lights
- LED animations
- Gradients
- Status indicators
- Audio-reactive lighting
- Temperature or sensor-based indicators
- Rotating patterns
The Data Out connection also allows multiple WS2812B-compatible modules to be connected in series. The microcontroller can send one continuous data stream containing information for all connected LEDs.
Power and Control
The module requires a 5V DC supply for normal operation. Power should be connected to the module’s 5V/VCC and GND terminals.
The LED data signal is supplied through the DIN (Data In) connection from a compatible microcontroller.
For a single ring, only one digital GPIO pin is generally required for the data signal. This makes the module useful when the microcontroller has limited available GPIO pins.
At maximum brightness with all LEDs displaying full white, the total current requirement can be significant because multiple LEDs may operate simultaneously. An appropriate 5V power source should therefore be selected according to the number of LEDs and desired brightness.
When connecting multiple rings, the power supply should also be sized according to the total number of LEDs in the complete installation.
Cascading Multiple LED Rings
One of the key advantages of the WS2812B system is its ability to connect multiple LED modules together.
The Data Out (DOUT) connection of one ring can be connected to the Data In (DIN) connection of the next ring. This creates a continuous chain of individually addressable LEDs.
For example, two 12-LED rings can be connected to create a 24-LED chain, while three rings can create a 36-LED chain.
The microcontroller can control the entire chain using a single digital data output. The software simply sends control information for each LED in sequence.
When using multiple rings, adequate power distribution is important because the total current requirement increases as more LEDs are added.
Controller Compatibility
The WS2812B LED ring is suitable for microcontroller platforms capable of generating the required WS2812B timing protocol.
It can be used with:
- Arduino boards
- ESP32 development boards
- STM32 microcontrollers
- Compatible AVR microcontrollers
- Other suitable embedded controllers
Popular LED control libraries can simplify programming and provide functions for setting individual LED colors, brightness, animations, and effects.
Because WS2812B communication is timing-sensitive, controllers that cannot reliably generate the required digital waveform may not operate the module correctly.
The module is therefore not recommended for direct control from Linux-based microcomputers or interpreted controllers such as Basic Stamp unless an appropriate hardware interface or compatible driver is used.
